Luke: The Gospel to Theophilus

Preface

What we need to understand is that like the other three gospels the Gospel of Luke presents us with a historical story that carries with it profound theological implications.  We’ll be confronted with a variety of crucial theological ideas: incarnation, penal substitution, redemption, and resurrection, just to name a few. Like the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John, Luke documents real events of history.  And like other historical documents, Luke eliminates the distortions, embellishments, and inaccuracies of the Jesus stories that were in circulation at the time.  What we have in Luke’s gospel is a reliable record of what Jesus said and did, as well as documentation of the more provocative and controversial claims he made.  Also, we’re confronted with the unusual events associated with his birth and death.  This is real history, but it’s the history of no ordinary man; it’s the story of Jesus.  It’s dramatic, confrontational, tragic, mysterious, miraculous, hopeful, and life changing.
